U.S. Forest Service

At the heart of STMDH is our volunteer partnership agreement with the U.S. Forest Service’s Dakota Prairie Grasslands. As the only nonprofit both able and willing to mow and string-trim the Maah Daah Hey, we work side-by-side with rangers to reach the most remote miles—always within wilderness standards, always getting it done. Since 2013, this partnership has carved thousands of miles back from overgrowth and erosion, doing what federal budgets and red tape simply can’t.

We also partner with the International Mountain Bike Association to strengthen advocacy and trail access, collaborate with the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library on joint restoration projects, and host trail workshops with the ND Parks & Recreation Department. Nick even spoke alongside the governor at the launch of North Dakota’s Outdoor Recreation Office—cementing STMDH as a voice for the trail. Together, these alliances fuse skill, grit, and purpose to protect the Badlands and the Maah Daah Hey for generations to come.

These wins keep the trail alive, enjoyable, and celebrated by all trail users.
